HOUSE BILL 37
This bill was introduced on January 11, 2017 by Earl Ehrhart, who serves district 36 in the Georgia House of Representatives. He is also a member of the committee of Higher Education which writes legislation that influences the University System of Georgia. Congressman Ehrhart said his intent was to uphold the current laws outlined in the Immigration Act which include guidelines for deportation of illegal aliens and those that have violated immigration laws and committed crimes in this country.
The bill passed during the 2017-2018 regular session and will take effect on July 1, 2017 as law. I bans private, post-secondary institutions of higher learning from declaring themselves as "sanctuary campuses" and implementing any policies or practices that interfere with the identification of, location of, and removal of students whose status is "undocumented" or illegal and/or who are suspected of criminal or terroristic activity. Government funds for grants, scholarships, and research will be restricted from any institution found guilty of violating this law.
